NAME: Clint Barton
ROLE: student
YEAR: one
AGE: eighteen

AU BACKSTORY:
Clint was born and raised in Waverly, Iowa. His father is an abusive alcoholic, and his mother died when he was young, supposedly by accidentally falling down the stairs. Clint and his older brother Barney have always suspected that their father was drunk and pushed her, but it could never be proven. Clint hasn't seen or spoken to his dad since he ran away from home.

When Clint was thirteen, Barney left to join the military. His life became even more miserable without his bro, who is pretty much the only person in his life that he cares about. He started getting into fights all the time at school, fell in with a bad crowd, and ended up getting expelled when he was caught drinking in the boys bathroom with some older kids.

After that, he ran away and joined The Carson Carnival of Traveling Wonders, where he was trained by a couple of shady dudes named Duquesne and Chisholm--The Swordsman and Trick Shot. He lived with his carnie fam for a couple of years, eventually discovering that Duquesne was stealing from the carnival's paymaster. When Clint confronted him and attempted to turn him in, Duquesne kicked his ass, left him in the dirt, and fled.

After finishing his tour of duty in Iraq, Barney tracked Clint down and convinced him to go back to school. Clint really didn't want to. Like really. He hates school. But Barney was adamant, and somehow Clint ended up getting a scholarship for St. Augustine, as a member of the archery team.

PERSONALITY:
Clint is friendly and easy enough to get along with, but he can be pretty cocky. That can get him into trouble with people who tend to pick fights, because he's not one to back down when he's being challenged. He likes to use humor and sarcasm to deflect conversations away from serious topics and to keep people from asking too many personal questions. It's usually easy to see what he's feeling because he's terrible at hiding his emotions and is definitely not the best liar. If he's unhappy, you'll sure as hell know it. Whether or not he'll want to talk about it is another matter.

He has a big problem with authority. Clint has no respect for his father, and after he discovered that one of his mentors in the circus was a criminal, he lost respect for him, too. The only reason he stayed with the circus after that was, as shady as it was all becoming, it was better than home.

He'll take a long time to warm up to any adult or authority figure at school because he's been let down by most of the ones he's allowed himself to become attached to in the past. If someone were to actually take the time to get close to him, prove that they're trustworthy, and trust him in return, Clint would end up being very loyal to them. That goes for adults and other students alike. He can play nice as long as somebody's not rubbing him the wrong way, but he won't actually open up unless he trusts them. Obviously he is crap at making real friends, even though he really wants to have them, and have somebody to look up to since his brother isn't around.
